Although the years of war have receded, our country is living in peaceful days. However, the losses and pain left by the war still exist deep in the hearts of many families and generations of Vietnamese people.
To have a peaceful life today, so many outstanding people of the nation have not spared their youth, blood, bones and lives, bravely fighting for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland, for the happiness of the people. There are people who have stayed forever on the battlefield; There are people who return with wounds on their bodies; There are also families who have to endure the pain of losing their most loved ones.
And every July, people across the country respectfully commemorate the Martyrs, wounded soldiers, sick soldiers and those who contributed to the revolution. This is not only an opportunity to express deep gratitude for the noble sacrifices of previous generations, but also to remind each person to live, study and contribute worthy of today’s peace.

On the occasion of the 79th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs’ Day (July 27, 1947 – July 27, 2026), let’s review the history and profound meaning of this special holiday. Thereby, contributing to educating the young generation about patriotic traditions, the indomitable fighting spirit of the nation and the concern of the Party, State and President Ho Chi Minh for war invalids, families of martyrs and people with meritorious services to the revolution.
After the victory of the August Revolution in 1945, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was born. When the revolutionary government was still young, the French colonialists plotted to return to invade our country. With the determination to protect the achievements of the revolution and newly won independence, our army and people heroically stood up to fight.
During the fierce battles, many officers, soldiers and compatriots were injured or heroically sacrificed their lives. Many families have lost husbands, fathers, and children; Many mothers will never see their children return. Out of infinite grief and gratitude, our people always remind each other to live in a way worthy of the deceased. Under the Party’s leadership, the movement to care for wounded soldiers, sick soldiers, families of martyrs and people with meritorious services gradually took shape, spread widely and became a fine tradition of the nation.
Right from the first days of the country’s founding, President Ho Chi Minh paid special attention to soldiers fighting on the front, the wounded and the families of those who died for the Fatherland.
On May 28, 1946, the Association “Help Soldiers in Distress” organized a talk at the Hanoi Opera House and President Ho Chi Minh attended. On July 11, 1946, a donation of clothes, shoes, and hats for soldiers on the front continued here, opening the “Soldiers’ Winter” campaign. During the program, Uncle Ho took off the cold shirt he was wearing to give to the soldiers.
On December 19, 1946, the nationwide resistance war broke out. As the war spread, the number of wounded and sacrificed soldiers increased, making the lives of soldiers and their families difficult. Faced with that situation, the Party and State have issued many guidelines and policies to take care of the material and spiritual life of war invalids, families of martyrs and people with meritorious services to the revolution.
In June 1947, delegates from the Viet Minh General Headquarters, the Women’s Association for National Salvation, the Political Department of the Vietnam National Army, the Department of Information and Propaganda and a number of localities met in Dai Tu, Thai Nguyen province.
Implementing President Ho Chi Minh’s directive, the conference discussed and agreed to choose a day of the year for people across the country to express gratitude to wounded soldiers and those who sacrificed for the Fatherland.
The conference decided to choose July 27, 1947 as National War Invalids Day, an opportunity for people across the country to show filial piety, charity and love for war invalids and martyrs’ families. In 1955, this day was renamed War Invalids and Martyrs Day, to more fully express gratitude to those who fought and sacrificed for the cause of national liberation, unification and defense of the Fatherland.
Since then, July 27 every year has become a major holiday, carrying profound political, historical and humanistic significance for the Vietnamese people.
Celebrating War Invalids and Martyrs’ Day is not only an occasion for remembrance and gratitude but also an opportunity for the younger generation to better understand the value of peace, independence and freedom. Gratitude needs to be expressed through specific actions in study, work and life. Every young person needs to actively practice and live responsibly towards themselves, their family and society; Contribute to building the homeland, making the country increasingly rich and beautiful.
