Choosing a University for Your Child: Do Not Look Only at Admission Scores

2026-08-21

When test scores and admission results are announced, the question “with this score, which school can I enter?” often appears first in many families. This is an important basis, but not enough to decide the entire multi-year university journey.

In fact, choose a university for your child needs to be looked at from more angles: is the major suitable, what are the admission conditions, what is the training program, is the learning environment suitable for the learner and is the family capable of accompanying throughout the process?

During the additional admission period, when there is not much time left to make a decision, parents need to calmly check each factor with their children instead of just relying on benchmark scores or school name.

Choosing a School for Your Child: Don't Just Look at Standard Scores

Scores help localize, but cannot decide for the whole family

Scores are the first piece of data that helps candidates determine the options they can consider. However, a score that matches the admission threshold does not mean that school or major is definitely suitable for the student.

The role of parents at this time is not to choose for their children, nor should they let their children manage themselves amid a series of admission information. A more effective way to accompany your child is to establish a process with your child: identify the field of interest, compare admission conditions, learn about the program, consider the learning environment and evaluate the actual ability to study.

Below are criteria parents can use when making decisions with their children.

Choosing a School for Your Child: Don't Just Look at Standard Scores

1. Select the major before choosing the school name

A university can train many majors with very different learning content, capacity requirements and development directions. Therefore, before asking “which school should I go to?”, families should start with the question “what field do you want to study?”.

Parents can discuss with their children about their interests, strengths, the subjects they are interested in, how they want to work in the future and the fields they want to learn more deeply. It is not necessary to immediately identify a single industry. Narrowing down to about 2-3 priority sectors is an important step forward.

In the 2026 additional admission information, Intracom University announced the following majors: Economic Law, Business Administration, Finance – Banking, Accounting, Electrical Engineering, Construction Engineering, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, English Language, Chinese Language, Tourism, Hotel Management and Project Management.

The industry list is a starting point for reference. After that, parents and candidates should continue to learn detailed information about the industry from the School’s official documents and consulting channels.

2. Compare the correct method and threshold for receiving documents

One of the common mistakes when researching admissions is just asking “how many points are considered?” without clearly defining the admission method.

The same candidate can have high school graduation exam scores, transcript scores or results from competency and thinking assessments. Each method has a different way of comparing and accepting documents.

According to the announced 2026 Supplemental Aspirations information, for 13 industries other than Economic Law, the threshold for receiving applications is 15 points according to 2026 high school graduation exam results or 16 points according to transcripts. As for the Economic Law sector, the corresponding level is: 20 points and 21 points.

However, parents should note: application threshold does not mean admission is guaranteed. Candidates still need to meet the general conditions, complete the application according to instructions and wait for the school to compare according to the actual quota status.

Therefore, when advising their children, parents should always check three factors at the same time: admission method, expected major and the threshold applicable to that method.

3. Learn about the program with specific questions

One of the school selection criteria the important thing is the training program. But instead of asking in general terms “Is the school good?”, parents should ask more specific questions.

For example: what groups of knowledge will students learn? What modules or experiential activities does the program have? What requirements do learners need to meet? What development directions have the industry announced by the Faculty or School?

The more specific the question, the easier the information received is to verify and compare options.

For content such as tuition fees, scholarships, detailed program structure or employment information, families should prioritize official sources from the School, Faculty or admission department. Do not make decisions based on word of mouth, posts from unknown sources or personal comments on social networks.

4. Observe the learning environment instead of just looking at promotional images

The university environment is where students study, communicate, form habits and develop themselves for many years. Therefore, parents should consider the environment with practical experience if possible.

When coming to school, observe the spaces students use regularly, how the school organizes support for learners, the ability to move, connect between areas and the candidates’ own feelings when experiencing it.

If you cannot go to school in person, families should prioritize videos and images with clear context and continue to ask questions when information is uncertain.

Sharing from previous students or parents can be a useful reference source, but should be properly understood as personal experience. These comments cannot replace official information about admission, training programs or learning conditions.

5. Assess the ability of both learners and families to study

A good choice is not only suitable in terms of taste but also feasible in reality.

Families should discuss frankly about travel time, study plans, the child’s level of autonomy, financial ability and the type of support parents can maintain during the study process.

Instead of just asking “do you like this school?”, parents can ask their children the question: if they study here, how will their child’s day go? What do you need to be proactive about? What does the family need to prepare?

A clear communication will help both parents and candidates understand that college choice does not end with matriculation. What’s more important is the ability to follow through and adapt throughout the journey afterward.

6. Complete the correct process if choosing additional admission to INU 2026

After considering the field of study and suitable conditions, candidates need to complete the application according to the correct process.

For INU supplementary admission 2026, candidates must register for admission online, complete online application information at the School’s admission website, then submit or deliver hard copy documents according to the instructions. Admissions and Student Affairs Department, 18th Floor, Building A Intracom Riverside, Vinh Thanh, Dong Anh, Hanoi.

Registration period extended arrive before 5:00 p.m. on August 21, 2026 or until the school meets its quota.

When needing support, parents and candidates can contact the School’s official channels or Hotline: 0968.395.392 – 0962.163.003 – 0373.655.355 – 1900.638.882.

When communicating publicly on social networks, you should only provide scores, admission methods, majors of interest and issues needing support. Do not publicly post CCCD, transcripts, certificates, application codes or other personal data.

Accompanying your child is asking the right questions

Choose a university for your child don’t rely solely on benchmarks, one recommendation or one emotion at a time. The appropriate decision needs to be built from many factors: major, admission conditions, program, environment, ability to study and the student’s true desire.

Parents do not need to make decisions for their children. What’s more important is to check the information with your child, recognize the pros and cons of each option and clearly determine the next step.
